2010 DPS RECYCLING EDUCATION PROGRAM
Recycle Here! launched it's 3rd annual recycling contest with the Detroit Public Schools which will run over the next three months. The schools will focus on recycling paper, plastic, and metal, which will then be purchased by Recycle Here! in an effort to help school’s raise funds for various student programs. The winning school will receive a cash prize and a mural by local Detroit artist, Carl Oxley.
This year the program focuses on the recycling process and the need for green stewardship. The contest will be shifting to an educational, more well rounded focus, instead of merely focusing on pounds collected. Schools will earn tokens for completing activities, as well as for the amount of recycling collected. The winning school (determined by the number of tokens earned) will receive the prize.
The overall focus of the program is to teach the students and their families about how we recycle in the City of Detroit. Curriculum includes visiting their neighborhood recycling center, understanding how Detroit processes solid waste and how they can make changes in their home life that reduce their impact on the environment.
Recycle Here! supplied each class with an educational package that includes a kick off rally with mascot Bee Green, aluminum tokens, posters, labels and an educational video tailored to the students for teachers to use in the program. Additionally, each pickup includes a lesson taught by the Recycle Here! team.
Each participating science class developed a “Green Team” to collect and separate their recyclables. Once a month Recycle Here! will collect recyclable materials from the students, who are encouraged to bring recyclables from home to increase their class’s revenue and household awareness.
